Protecting Your Belongings When You Move

Moving from one place to another can be a bit stressful, causing you to forget to take precautions that can cause some of your belongings to be robbed. When you are in the process of moving, you can become quite vulnerable, as you will be trying to tie up loose ends at one place while getting a new place prepared to bring your items inside. Here are a few tips you can use to make sure your items are safeguarded while you are preparing for your big move.

Keep An Extra Vehicle Around

When you are going back and forth between your old home and your new home, it is a good idea to have a vehicle stay at your old home at all times. Neighbors and people passing by may have seen you bringing items outside to throw away or move to the new home. If people are aware you are in the process of moving, your old home will be a target whenever you are not there to watch over it. Leaving a friend's vehicle or your spare vehicle in your driveway will help keep people from be nosy and perhaps taking items that do not belong to them while you are gone.

Do Not Flaunt Your Belongings

When you are moving into your new home, do not place any expensive items out where they can be viewed by people passing by. Make sure to put curtains up on your windows as soon as you start moving things inside your new home so that people do not peek inside to see what you have while you are not there. If you buy new furniture or electronics for your new home, do not place the boxes out on the curb for pickup, showing everyone what you have just bought. Instead, fold up the cardboard and bring it to a recycling center.

Keep An Eye On Documents

When moving important documents, place them in a locking file cabinet so that information cannot be looked through by moving service workers or contractors working on your new home when your belongings arrive. Remove paperwork from your files that you will not need to haul with you, saving on space and making boxes or file cabinets lighter. Hire a shredding service or use an office shredder for paperwork that has any secure information listed upon it. Keep the most important files in your vehicle to move yourself, keeping them save from theft. For more information, check out companies like ABC Moving & Storage.
